Alternatives to college?

EDUCATION

by THE OLBIOS TEAM

Enstitute, a national non-profit, is reinventing apprenticeships for 21st century careers. Working to address both the growing cost of higher education as well as the current youth unemployment crisis, Enstitute provides students with one to two year paid, full-time, apprenticeships at high growth startups, small businesses, and corporations around the country to prepare them for the workforce and accelerate their career trajectory. Enstitute piloted a program in 2012 with 11 students in New York City. The program flips the traditional model of education on its head. Students spend Monday-Friday on the job, working in key roles at high growth companies, where they learn real-world skills across technology, business, and design. They supplement their experience with an online curriculum as well as weekly community and networking events. Halfway through the pilot program, 70% of students received preliminary full-time offers for permanent jobs. Additionally, an influx of over 700 students and close to 1000 companies applied to the 2013 program. As the cost of higher education mounts, debt-laden students, cash-strapped parents and members of the media are asking: is traditional college still the answer?
