Half a million women we lose

The path to end global poverty begins with better health for moms.  Yet of all the eight Millennium Development Goals set to advance global growth and prosperity the least progress has been made toward improving maternal health. But only half of women in developing countries receive the recommended healthcare during pregnancy & childbirth.  This half needs better information about their rights to care and access to a full range of safe birth services. In reality, every year half a million women, mothers, die during child-birth and pregnancy-related complications, leaving their kids without mothers. Unbelievable as it may seem, 80% of those deaths are preventable. Reacting to this reality, Liya Kebede launched the Liya Kebede Foundation in conjunction with her appointment as a World Health Organization Goodwill Ambassador in 2005. LKF is a non-profit foundation that supports leading organizations working to reduce maternal and newborn deaths in Africa through advocacy, education, grant-making and partnershipsThey focus on training, community education and safe birth service delivery priorities. They champion innovative approaches to expand safe motherhood education and services to women at greatest risk through advocacy and seed funding.
