The founders of TheReligiousLeft.Org claim as their inheritance the storied legacy of progressive religious activism in United States. The beliefs and practices developed by progressive religious activists have indeed played an integral role in nearly every movement promoting liberty, equality, and solidarity in the history of this nation, and we hope to help maintain the fundamental bond between progressive religion and the on-going struggle for justice in the 21st century. Their mission is two-fold. By challenging conservative voices that claim authority on matters of religion and politics, they seek to break the conservative monopoly on public discourse about religion in American society. In addition, they hope to provide progressives with a space to engage in constructive dialogue that recognizes the full complexity of a nation’s religious and political character.
