The meaning of being Catholic in Ireland

CULTURE & SOCIETY

by THE OLBIOS TEAM

Trocaire is the official overseas development agency of the Catholic Church in Ireland. They work with some of the world s poorest people, supporting communities and delivering long-term change to people’s lives. Established in 1973 by the Bishops of Ireland, today Trocaire works in over 20 countries on issues including livelihoods, human rights, gender equality, HIV, climate change and emergency relief. In Ireland, they raise awareness about the causes of poverty through our outreach programmes in the education sector, through parish networks, and through our public campaigns and advocacy work. Trocaire works in partnership with communities in the developing world to support their efforts to improve their lives, meet their basic needs and ensure their human dignity. They believe that real change can only come about by giving people the tools and skills necessary to change their own lives. Their support is offered regardless of race, gender, religion or politics. And they offer long-term support to their partners and beneficiaries around the world, maintaining relationships over a number of years. Trocaire currently works across a number of programme areas in over 20 countries. As a member of the Caritas network of Catholic development and humanitarian agencies, Trocaire can reach remote communities all over the developing world, creating long-term projects aimed at delivering long-term results.
