CLAUS BREHM

OLBIOS CORRESPONDENT PARAGUAY

I was born in Paraguay, South America. I studied forestry at the Universidad Nacional de Asunción and worked in environmental impact assessment, forest plantation management and environmental conservation projects. In 2015 I was awarded an MA degree in Forest Ecosystem Science at the University of Melbourne in Australia. Living there allowed me to travel to many countries in the South East Asia region to learn about issues and solutions to environmental challenges. In 2016 I earned a diploma in natural resources management and conservation in Yucatan, Mexico with DUCKs Unlimited learning more about effective environmental policies and the social aspect of conservation. I worked as a volunteer in Veracruz on a Sea Turtle camp for almost 2 months.
Currently I’m working at the Peace Corps Paraguay as a Technical Trainer at the Environmental Conservation Sector. This puts me in a key position to use the knowledge and energy of volunteers to help rural communities to protect their natural resources and improve their livelihood. Deforestation and its consequences as biodiversity and habitat loss, soil erosion, and reduction of water quality are still mayor threats in most developing countries. Having people working in situ with the poorest part of the population to create awareness and provide effective tools to both, raise life quality and enhance environmental protection is very satisfying. From my point of view, if solutions are to be sustainable they have to be proposed in the field, not in the office.
