Saving land, limbs and lives

SOCIAL ISSUES - SCIENCES & NEW TECHNOLOGIES

Demine Robotics, founded by Richard Yim, operates in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada and in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. It specialises in product development and engineering expertise in the context of explosive clearance operations with the mission to save land, limbs and lives of those affected by conflict by developing and delivering robotic solutions to clear landmines and remnants of war safely and efficiently.

Its solutions revolutionise clearance operations of antipersonnel landmines and other small-scale unexploded ordnance, including cluster munitions and buried improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Demine Robotics also partner and work with some of the most respected global humanitarian organisations to transform explosive clearance.

Indeed, even today, there are still thousands of landmine related deaths every year. In addition to the direct cost of human life, landmines are also accompanied with other consequences. Heavily mined regions are unable to be farmed stunting the economic growth of agricultural economies. In order to combat the use of landmines, large-scale efforts have been enacted. However, of these large-scale efforts a popular approach is manual-excavation and controlled explosions. In this instance, landmines are removed from the ground manually in order to be neutralized. This increased contact with the landmine is both extremely dangerous as well as time consuming.

Richard Yim is developing a product to make the demining process safer and more efficient by building a machine to excavate and neutralize mines without human supervision.

Finally, let us not forget this terrible number: more than 100,000,000 anti-personnel mines, built to make horrible injuries, have been laid in different parts of the world by terrorists or government forces.
