In recent times, we have seen significant changes in the philanthropic sector in China, and with increasing wealth in the country, Chinese philanthropy has the potential to advance solutions to pressing social and environmental challenges. This series will attempt to open that conversation to a broad and influential audience of thought leaders and development practitioners from around the world. Problem: The boom in philanthropy has yet been able to give a strong push to social entrepreneurship in China. Barrier to Progress: The lack of trust and lack of talented people with expertise in philanthropy Solution: Philanthropic leaders need to take the initiative and modernize philanthropy culture by motivating and empowering the majority of Chinese to become part of the solution. Philanthropy in China needs to shift from a rich man’s club to civil engagement, and to move beyond mercy money to promoting positive social change.
