New roles for young people

CULTURE & SOCIETY

What could a young person actually become? What are the roles and missions he could embody? Adam Fletcher’s The Freechild Projectis aiming to advocate and celebrate social change led by and/or supported by young people around the world, especially those who have been historically denied the right to participate. He does this through a website, or by facilitating all kinds of training and workshops. Without any doubt, the issues addressed by those young people leading social change are as broad as those in the rest of society. The impressive resource pages of the Freechild Project feature examples, other websites, and publications from around the world of young people involved in social change. They have identified these categories through what they call “guerrilla” research. This method involves going into the communities where these activities happen and working with young people and adults to identify what is being addressed. An Interesting aspect of this program is that the phrase “young people” is meant to include children and youth, from the time of birth through “adulthood,” which could mean various ages, 18, 21, 25, or 30, depending on who the person is and what they are doing. All of the issue categories that were chosen by the Freechild Project can all create “social change.” Activities that are not intended to challenge, examine, create, reflect upon, or otherwise change society, are simply not included.
