What is the Agassi Prep?

CULTURE & SOCIETY

by THE OLBIOS TEAM

Andre Agassi was the wild child of tennis. While most tennis players wore white back in the 1980’s, Andre came out of the shadows with neon colors and funky hair. He made and built Agassi Prep, a charter school in his hometown, Las Vegas. The charity took in $25 million alone in 2009. Defined by educational excellence, the Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy (a K-12 public charter school) maximizes the potential of every student. As a center of strength, AACPA provides an array of choices and opportunities to underserved communities. As charter schools must provide their own facilities, The Andre Agassi Charitable Foundation became a fundraising powerhouse, raising funds to construct the $40 million school campus. AACPA is located in West Las Vegas, one of the most economically challenged areas of the city. The students attending AACPA are selected by a public computer-based lottery system. Preference is given to children living in a two-mile radius from the school, which is a low-income neighborhood. There are no entrance exams or tuition fees required.  Students and parents are required to sign a Code of Excellence pledging a commitment to fulfill school requirements, including community service hours. The Academy wants to rank in the top 100 high schools in the nation on the U.S. News and World Report ranking of high schools by 2016.
