Engineers Without Borders – International (EWB-I) is an international federation whose mission is to facilitate collaboration, exchange of information, and assistance among its member groups. EWB-I helps its Member Associations develop their capacity to assist disadvantaged communities in poor countries. Their mission is to partner with these communities to improve their quality of life through education and implementation of sustainable engineering projects, while promoting global experience for engineers, engineering students, and similarly motivated non-engineers. EWB-I also creates links between like-minded organizations and cuts across national borders.
EWB-I seeks to provide a unique platform for its member groups, affiliates, and outside organizations in order to: Create a new generation of global engineers – Contribute to meeting the MDGs through capacity building in local projects – Collaborate on projects and studies worldwide – Share ideas, experiences, technical knowledge, and documentation Develop partnerships on community projects – Coordinate student exchanges, internships, and professional volunteers – Train and connect engineering professionals and students around the world.
The projects aim to provide alternative sources of energy to remote communities who are not connected to the local grid. In some projects a single system is built and in some projects the mini systems are scaled up to mini independent grids.
